Climate and Weather Information about the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

Continuing my journey in the Biodiversity Stewardship class, this week we took time to collect and organize climate links to our area of study. My area of study, as mentioned in previous blogs, is the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.

The first link is simply one to weather.gov, with the specific address being the ranger station closest to the Joyce Kilmer Forest. This is one of the most valuable tools to have when planning an outdoor excursion (which I still plan to do soon), as it follows the first Leave No Trace Principle: Plan Ahead and Prepare. Though the weather at the ranger station may be different than the weather in the higher elevations of the forest, this is still a good way to get an idea of what to expect before heading out.

Additionally, this radar map from the National Weather Service is helpful for the same reasons listed above. However, as a visual person myself, I tend to prefer this one.

Below are a couple of links that are more climate-specific. The first are climate graphs and charts for Asheville, NC, which is the data center that was closest to the forest. It provides another interesting visual look at average temperatures, highs and lows, precipitation amounts and types, and the number of days above or below normal. It's an interesting way to track climate data.

This link is from the Climate Prediction Center at NOAA. It provides outlooks up to one month regarding temperature, precipitation, weather hazards, and more that's worth digging into if you're interested. As a whole, not just for the Joyce Kilmer Forest, it provides cool information to track seasonal weather patterns.
